Why Your Shopify Products Aren't Showing in ChatGPT Shopping (and How to Fix It)
Published
Last checked against Shopify's and OpenAI's help centers: October 17, 2026.
You asked ChatGPT for exactly the kind of product you sell, and it recommended three other stores. Before you buy an app or rewrite your catalog, work out where the chain breaks. For Shopify merchants there are only a few places it can break, and each has a different fix.
How it's supposed to work: Shopify shares eligible products with ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and Shopify says "you don't need to do anything for your products to be discovered by ChatGPT" (Shopify Help: Selling on ChatGPT). OpenAI says the same from its side: Shopify merchants are already integrated, and "No additional work is required from individual merchants" (OpenAI Help: Shopping with ChatGPT Search). So if you're missing, something specific is stopping you.
Work through these five checks in order.
Check 1: Is your store eligible at all?
Go to Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin. If your store shows as Ineligible, click it to see the reason (Shopify Help: Agentic storefronts and products). An ineligible store has no products in Shopify Catalog, so nothing else in this guide will help until this is fixed.
The ChatGPT channel requires that:
- Your store sells to customers in the United States. You can be based anywhere, but US buyers must be able to purchase.
- Your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy are filled in under Settings > Policies.
- You've agreed to the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service.
- Your products meet Shopify Catalog requirements (Check 2).
Also confirm nobody switched ChatGPT off. "Allow Shopify to manage for me" is on by default. If a staff member turned it off and then turned off Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT, your products stop being shared. Shopify says removal "can take up to 7 days," so a recent change may still be working its way through.
Outside the US? Selling to US buyers is the only market requirement Shopify lists for ChatGPT. If you don't ship to the US, ChatGPT can't find your products through Shopify Catalog, though it may still cite your site through web search (Check 5).
Check 2: Is the specific product excluded?
A store can be eligible while individual products are excluded. Shopify Catalog only includes a product if (Shopify Help: Catalog requirements):
- it has a title and at least one image,
- its price is greater than 0 (free products aren't included),
- it's published to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless channel with an identifiable product URL,
- it isn't Unlisted and isn't hidden from search engines (for example with the
seo.hiddenmetafield), - it doesn't contain sensitive content in its images or description, and
- it isn't in an excluded category.
The excluded categories include alcohol, tobacco and vaping, prescription and medical products, weapons (including recreational and imitation weapons), explosives, hazardous materials, adult content, sexual wellness, money-related products, services and add-ons, event tickets, live animals, and "Uncategorized products." Shopify classifies products "based on your product information," which "can differ from the product category" you set in the admin. A vague title and a one-line description can get a perfectly normal product classified wrongly.
Fixes: set a specific product category for every product (how to do it in bulk), make titles say what the product is, and check that nothing is accidentally Unlisted or priced at 0. B2B-only products are also excluded, because "Shopify's agentic storefronts support only direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales."
Check 3: Is ChatGPT applying its own rules?
Even when a product is in Shopify Catalog, products covered by OpenAI's "Prohibited products and services" don't appear in ChatGPT discovery results (Shopify Help: Selling on ChatGPT; OpenAI commerce policies). If you sell in a regulated or sensitive category, read OpenAI's list. Nothing in your product data will override it.
Check 4: Are you included but not chosen?
This is the most common case, and the hardest to see. OpenAI says "A product appears in the carousel when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to your intent," and that not every available product is shown. ChatGPT weighs the query, the user's context (such as Memory and custom instructions), price, reviews, and "structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (e.g., price, product description)." Product results "are not ads," so there's no way to pay for a slot (OpenAI Help).
Shopify gives you two tools to see where you stand (Shopify Help: Managing agentic storefronts):
- Search preview (Sales channels > Agentic). Type the query a shopper would use and see which of your products rank in Shopify Catalog. Shopify notes that channels often re-rank results, so treat it as a directional signal.
- Listing quality signals. Shopify scores description completeness, image coverage, product reviews, variant and option completeness, and shop policy completeness. For products that don't rank, Shopify suggests better descriptions, more images or complete variant data.
What to improve, in order of effort:
- Titles a stranger would understand. "The Voyager 2" doesn't match "waterproof hiking boots". "Voyager 2 Men's Waterproof Hiking Boot" does.
- Factual descriptions: what it is, materials, dimensions, who it's for. An assistant can't match "Pure vibes" to a question.
- Variants with option names and their own images, so "the green one in size 10" resolves to a real, in-stock variant.
- Barcodes where your products have real GTINs (how to add them).
- Category attributes such as color, material and size, filled in after you set the category.
Shopify's own list of fields AI platforms use is in Optimizing your products for AI platforms, and we walk through all of it in How to get your Shopify products to show up in ChatGPT.
Check 5: Are you blocking OpenAI's search crawler?
Shopify Catalog isn't the only way ChatGPT learns about stores. ChatGPT search also uses OpenAI's web crawler. OpenAI describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," recommends allowing it in robots.txt, and says sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI: Overview of OpenAI crawlers).
Shopify's default robots.txt is fine for most stores. If you or a developer customized robots.txt.liquid to block AI bots, check that OAI-SearchBot isn't caught by the rule. (Blocking GPTBot, the model-training crawler, is a separate choice.) Shopify warns that "incorrect use of the feature can result in loss of all traffic" (Shopify Help: Editing robots.txt.liquid). OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply.
How to test without fooling yourself
ChatGPT personalizes results, so one search on your own account proves little.
- Use a temporary chat, or a different account, so your Memory and history don't skew results.
- Ask the way a shopper would ("waterproof hiking boots for wide feet under $150"), not with your brand name.
- Try several phrasings and note which competitors come up. Their listings show what "relevant" looks like for that query.
- Compare with the search preview in Shopify. If you rank in the preview but not in ChatGPT, the gap is on the ranking side (Check 4). If you don't rank in the preview either, look again at Checks 1 and 2.
Then track whether it's working. Shopify's Agentic reports show sessions and orders by channel; see how to track ChatGPT sales in Shopify.
What won't fix it
- An llms.txt file. Shopify already serves one by default, and there's no public evidence it affects ChatGPT product results. See Shopify llms.txt: do you need one?
- Paying for placement. OpenAI says product results aren't ads and aren't influenced by partnerships.
- Keyword-stuffed titles. Assistants match meaning, and stuffed titles make listings harder to understand.
Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic section shows Ineligible | Store requirement missing | Check 1 |
| Some products never appear, even in search preview | Product excluded or misclassified | Check 2 |
| Regulated product category | OpenAI commerce policies | Check 3 |
| Appears in preview, rarely in ChatGPT | Relevance and data quality | Check 4 |
| Site never cited in ChatGPT answers | robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot | Check 5 |
