Shopify llms.txt: Do You Need One? (An Honest Look at the Evidence)

If you've searched the Shopify App Store for "ChatGPT" or "AI SEO" this year, you've seen a lot of apps selling llms.txt files, often as the main way to "get found by AI." This post looks at what the file is, what Shopify already does for you, and what the evidence says. The short version: most Shopify merchants don't need to do anything, and shouldn't pay a monthly fee for this. The evidence that llms.txt improves AI visibility is weak, and we'll show you why we think so.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed convention published at llmstxt.org in 2024 by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI. It's a Markdown file at the root of a site (/llms.txt) that gives AI tools a short, curated summary of the site and links to its most useful pages. Think of it as a table of contents written for language models.
It's a proposal, not a standard. No major AI company has committed to using it when deciding what to show or cite in search answers.
What Shopify already does: every store has one
On May 28, 2026, Shopify announced that every store "includes a default agents.md file" at /agents.md, and that /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt serve the same content by default (Shopify developer changelog).
According to Shopify's theme documentation (llms.txt.liquid):
- If your theme has no template for it, Shopify manages
/llms.txtautomatically, mirroring/agents.md. Shopify says the managed file is enough for most stores. - You can override it in Online Store > Themes > Edit code by adding
templates/agents.md.liquid(which changes all three files) ortemplates/llms.txt.liquid(which changes only/llms.txt). - The custom template only gets a restricted set of data: the
requestobject and anagentsobject with your store name, URL, sitemap and agent endpoints. Your products and collections aren't available, so you'd maintain anything else by hand. - It's served once, at your primary domain, with no per-language or per-market version.
Two practical consequences:
- Old "upload an llms.txt" methods stopped working. Merchants reported in late May 2026 that custom files and redirects at
/llms.txtno longer resolved, because Shopify now answers that URL itself. Overriding it now means using a theme template (summary of the community threads). - "Your store has no llms.txt" is no longer true for Shopify stores. If an app or audit says otherwise, check the URL yourself: visit
yourstore.com/llms.txt.
What the evidence says
Here's what we could find, from the most authoritative source down:
Google says Search ignores it. Google's AI optimization guide says: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search," and that maintaining llms.txt "will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them" (Google Search Central, updated July 10, 2026). Google's page on AI features says the same for AI Overviews and AI Mode: no special AI text files or schema are needed (Google: AI features and your website).
OpenAI points to robots.txt, not llms.txt. We found no public statement from OpenAI that ChatGPT search uses llms.txt. Its crawler documentation tells site owners to use robots.txt to control whether OAI-SearchBot can surface their site in ChatGPT search (OpenAI crawlers). For Shopify products specifically, OpenAI says merchants are already integrated through Shopify Catalog and "No additional work is required" (OpenAI Help: Shopping with ChatGPT Search).
Server logs show very little reading. Ahrefs analyzed llms.txt requests across 137,210 domains and found that 97% of llms.txt files received zero requests in May 2026. Most requests came from bots that weren't AI tools at all (as summarized in this review of the 2026 evidence, which links the original Ahrefs study).
No measurable link to AI citations. SE Ranking looked at about 300,000 domains and found no clear effect of having an llms.txt on AI citations (Search Engine Journal, Nov 2025).
Where it does get used: agents and developer tools. Chrome's Lighthouse now has an agentic-browsing audit for llms.txt. It only flags a server error, and marks a missing file as not applicable because the file is "optional for now." Chrome's reasoning is efficiency: "Without this file, agents may spend more time crawling the site" (Chrome for Developers). Coding assistants also read llms.txt files on documentation sites. That's a real use, but it isn't shoppers finding your products.
Our honest reading: the evidence doesn't show that llms.txt gets products recommended in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode or anywhere else. It's not proof of zero effect, and that could change if a major assistant starts using it. Right now, though, it's a low-priority file. On Shopify, that file already exists.
So, do you need one?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Standard Shopify store | Nothing. Shopify serves a managed /llms.txt. Check that it loads. |
| Paying for an llms.txt app | Consider cancelling. Shopify's default covers the file. Overriding it requires a theme template, so check whether the app still works. |
| You want custom text (brand summary, key policy links) | Add templates/agents.md.liquid with a short, factual summary. Keep it accurate and update it when policies change. |
| Headless/Hydrogen store | /llms.txt is your route to control. Low priority. Do it after product data. |
| You sell API or developer products | More useful: coding agents do read llms.txt on docs sites. |
If you do customize it, keep it short and factual: what you sell, who you sell to, where shipping, returns and contact pages live. Don't paste in keyword lists. Nothing suggests AI tools reward that, and Google treats keyword stuffing as spam elsewhere.
Where to spend the time instead
For Shopify merchants, AI shopping channels such as ChatGPT and Copilot read Shopify Catalog, which is built from your product data. That's where the leverage is:
- Eligibility. Products need a title, an image, a price above 0, a published status, and a category that isn't excluded. "Uncategorized products" are excluded. See the Shopify Catalog requirements checklist.
- Product categories. Assign a Standard Product Taxonomy category to everything (bulk guide).
- Descriptions, variants, barcodes and images. These are the fields Shopify lists in Optimizing your products for AI platforms.
- Policies. ChatGPT eligibility requires Terms of service, Privacy and Return and refund policies.
If a product isn't showing up, work through why your products aren't showing in ChatGPT before touching llms.txt.
A note on our own tools: our free AI readiness checker includes llms.txt as a low-weight, informational check, because people ask about it. On a standard Shopify store it will pass, since Shopify serves the file for you. Most of the score comes from product data and policies.
