What the checker looks at

AI shopping assistants answer questions like “best waterproof hiking boots under $150” by reading product data from stores across the web. They can only recommend what they can read and understand. This tool looks at a Shopify store the way an outside crawler does and checks:

  • Product data quality for up to 250 products: descriptive titles, descriptions long enough to answer shopper questions, product type, brand, images, image alt text, variant images, barcodes (GTIN/UPC/EAN) and shipping weights.
  • AI crawler access: whether robots.txt lets assistant bots (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot) and training crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) read product pages.
  • Store policies: whether refund, shipping, privacy and terms pages are published and not empty.
  • Structured data: whether a sample product page includes Product JSON-LD with price, availability, brand, GTIN and ratings.
  • llms.txt: an optional, emerging convention for giving AI tools a short summary of a site. It carries little weight in the score.

Why it matters

Shoppers are starting product research in AI assistants instead of search boxes. When an assistant builds an answer, it favors products whose details it can read reliably: a clear title, a factual description, a price and stock status, a brand and a barcode to match the item across sources. Missing fields don't cause an error you can see; your products are simply left out of the answer. Policies matter too, because shopping surfaces want to tell buyers about returns and delivery before sending them to your checkout.

The score is a weighted average: 60% comes from the product catalog and 40% from store-wide setup. Each issue shows roughly how many points fixing it could recover, so you can start with the changes that matter most.

Frequently asked questions

Is the checker really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no install. It reads only the public pages and feeds that any visitor or AI crawler can already see, and runs a fixed set of checks on them.

Can I check a store I don't own?

Yes, because it only uses public data. It's handy for benchmarking competitors. Results are cached for 30 minutes, and each visitor can run a limited number of checks per 10 minutes.

Why does my score differ from the score in the Surfaced app?

The app reads your catalog through the Shopify Admin API, so it can also check your Shopify product category, SEO title and meta description, and category attributes, and it scores every product. This free check scores up to 250 products from the public catalog feed and reads barcodes, weights and alt text for a sample of them.

Can I share or embed my score?

Yes. Every check gets its own report link you can copy or share on X and LinkedIn, and a small score badge you can embed on your site. You can also compare your store side by side with another store from the report page.

Does it work on stores that aren't on Shopify?

No. It relies on public endpoints that Shopify storefronts provide, such as /products.json. Password-protected stores and stores that disable these endpoints can't be checked from outside; install the app to scan them from the admin instead.

Is blocking AI crawlers bad?

Not always. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or CCBot is a legitimate choice. Blocking the bots that fetch pages live to answer shopping questions, such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User or PerplexityBot, means those assistants can't read your product pages when a shopper asks.
