Shopify Agentic Storefronts Explained: What They Are and What Merchants Should Do
Published
Last checked against Shopify's Help Center: October 13, 2026.
"Agentic storefronts" is one of those Shopify features many merchants already have without knowing it. This guide explains what it is, which AI assistants it reaches, how orders and checkout work, which settings to look at, and what's worth your time.
The short version
Agentic storefronts is a sales channel in your Shopify admin (Sales channels > Agentic) that shares your products with AI shopping platforms through Shopify Catalog, Shopify's structured product feed. Eligible merchants are included automatically, with no apps to install and no transaction fees beyond normal payment processing (Shopify blog, June 18, 2026).
Shopify announced on March 24, 2026 that merchants could sell to ChatGPT users through agentic storefronts, with products discoverable in ChatGPT by default (Shopify News).
Which AI channels are included?
Per Shopify's Help Center, the Agentic section currently lists (Managing agentic storefronts):
| Channel | How buying works | Status (per Shopify, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Discovery inside ChatGPT. Checkout happens on your store's checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Active by default for eligible stores selling to US buyers |
| Microsoft Copilot | Discovery, plus direct checkout in Copilot for eligible merchants | "Thousands" of merchants selling as of March 2026 |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Native checkout powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Select brands selling to US buyers; broader rollout underway |
| Meta surfaces | Listed in the Agentic section | Rolling out |
| Shop | Shopify's own app, uses Shopify Catalog | Can't be deactivated from the Agentic section |
| Other channels | A grouped option for smaller and emerging AI agents | Available when manual management is on |
What about Perplexity? Perplexity isn't one of the listed agentic-storefront channels. Shopify's own guide says Perplexity sources product data through integrations, including Shopify, and that Perplexity's in-chat Instant Buy uses PayPal, so those orders run outside Shopify checkout (Shopify blog: Perplexity shopping). Perplexity also runs a free Merchant Program.
How does checkout work?
The answer depends on the channel:
- ChatGPT: buyers are sent to your own online store checkout. Your branding, checkout customizations, discounts and payment methods all apply. There's no ChatGPT "direct checkout" toggle to manage (Shopify Help: ChatGPT).
- Copilot, Google AI Mode/Gemini, Meta: these support direct checkout inside the AI surface where available. You can turn direct checkout on or off per channel. When it's off, shoppers are sent to your store to buy. For Copilot specifically, see selling on Microsoft Copilot with Shopify.
In both cases you stay the merchant of record. Shopify handles payments, taxes and fraud checks, and orders flow into your admin like any other order.
The settings that matter
All of these live in Sales channels > Agentic:
- "Allow Shopify to manage for me" (on by default). All channels are active, direct checkout is on where supported, and you're auto-enrolled in new channels as Shopify adds them.
- Manual management. Turn the setting off to control:
- Shopify Catalog access, globally or per channel. Turning it off can take up to 7 days to stop data sharing, and also turns off direct checkout.
- Auto-enroll new storefronts.
- Direct checkout per channel.
- Hiding specific products. Removing Catalog access doesn't remove products from Shop. To hide a product from all agentic channels (and from search engines), Shopify says to use the Unlisted status or the
seo.hiddenmetafield.
Opting out of ChatGPT through Shopify doesn't guarantee your products never appear there. ChatGPT can still find them through ordinary web crawling.
What data do AI channels actually see?
Shopify Catalog "structures and syndicates product data in real time": titles, descriptions, images, pricing, inventory and shipping speeds. Catalog also uses machine learning to infer extra attributes (Shopify blog). Shopify's optimization guide adds type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes, variant option names and store policies (Optimizing your products for AI platforms).
The same Shopify blog post lists four factors behind generative-engine visibility: data completeness, structured formatting, trust signals (real-time pricing and inventory) and engagement signals (click-through and conversion rates).
Two things follow from this:
- Your product data is the input. Agentic storefronts don't write better descriptions for you. If a product's title is "The Voyager 2" and its description is one line, that's all the assistant has to work with.
- Eligibility rules apply. Products need a title, an image, a price above zero, a URL, and published status, and can't be in excluded categories. "Uncategorized products" are one of those categories (Catalog requirements).
What you get to see: the built-in analytics
The Agentic section includes per-channel reports for sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion, plus a total-sales report across AI channels. Sales include both referral-based and direct-checkout orders. You'll also find listing quality signals (description completeness, image coverage, verified reviews, variant completeness, policy completeness) and a search preview that shows raw Catalog results for a query. Headless stores don't yet get the performance analytics (Shopify Help). Here's how to use listing quality and the search preview step by step.
Is it worth paying attention to?
Shopify's Q1 2026 data: orders from AI-referred traffic grew nearly 13x year over year, AI chatbot referral sessions grew more than 8x, and AI-referred sessions that start on a product page converted nearly 50% higher than organic search. Organic search still sends more sessions than all AI platforms combined (Shopify Enterprise blog, May 2026).
So it's a small channel growing fast, and its inputs (your product data and policies) are things you already maintain.
What to do this week
- Open Sales channels > Agentic. Confirm "manage for me" is on, unless you have a reason to manage channels manually.
- Complete your Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return/refund policy. ChatGPT eligibility requires them.
- Check the listing quality signals and start with the worst-scoring best sellers.
- Fix eligibility leaks: products at price 0, missing images, unintentionally unlisted, or without a product category.
- Rewrite your top 20 product titles and descriptions as plain facts. Set product categories and fill the category attributes.
- Run the search preview with three real customer questions and note what comes back.
- Check again in 30 days using the Agentic sales report.
Common questions
Do I need an app to sell in ChatGPT? No. Shopify says no apps are needed. Apps can help you audit and fix product data at scale, or report on AI traffic the built-in reports don't cover, but they don't control eligibility.
Does it cost extra? No extra transaction fees; standard payment processing applies (Shopify Help: ChatGPT).
I'm not in the US. Does this apply to me? For ChatGPT, your store must sell to US buyers, but it can be based anywhere.
Will Shopify change this? Almost certainly. Channels, rollout status and settings have changed several times in 2026. Check the Help Center pages linked here.
