Shopify Listing Quality and Search Preview: How to Use Them

Last checked against Shopify's Help Center: October 18, 2026.

In your Shopify admin, Sales channels > Agentic has a tool most merchants scroll past: a search preview that shows how your products rank in Shopify Catalog for a query, with a listing quality meter next to each product. Catalog is the feed behind AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google's Gemini, so this is the closest thing Shopify gives you to "how do I look to AI shopping?". This guide explains what the meter measures, how to read the preview without fooling yourself, and what to fix first.

Everything here comes from Shopify's Managing agentic storefronts page unless another source is linked.

Before you start: is the store eligible?

The preview only helps if your products are in Catalog. Shopify's agentic products page says the Agentic section shows either a product count or an Ineligible warning with the reasons. If you see the warning, work through the Catalog requirements checklist first.

Step 1: Run a search preview

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
  2. In the field labelled "Enter a search query to see how you might rank", type a product name or keyword and press Enter. Or click a suggestion under Top search queries or Queries where your products appeared.
  3. Optionally, in Preview this search, click a channel name to see how the query might display in that platform's AI chat interface.

Shopify says the tool shows the raw outputs of Shopify Catalog search. If your products make the global top results, you'll see a message such as "10 of your products are in the top ranking search". Those products are competing against every other product in Shopify Catalog for that query, not just your own catalog.

If none of your products make the top 10, the tool shows your most relevant products that weren't competitive enough, under Improve your listing. That list is the useful part.

Which queries to test

Shopify's suggested queries are a good start. Add your own in three groups:

  • Category queries a shopper would type without knowing your brand: "waterproof hiking boots for wide feet", "linen duvet cover queen".
  • Problem queries: "gift for a coffee lover under $50", "boots that don't need breaking in".
  • Your best sellers by plain description, not by product name. Searching your own product names mostly tells you that your names are unique.

Two caveats Shopify states

  • It's directional. "Agentic storefronts often re-rank results based on their own logic," so what customers see in a channel can differ. Shopify calls the tool a directional signal, not an exact prediction.
  • Unrelated searches look odd. A query unrelated to your store can return strange results, which still reflect what's most relevant in your store.

Step 2: Read the listing quality meter

Each product in the results has a colored Listing quality bar. Shopify describes it as "a visual sign of how complete and competitive your product listing is for discoverability". Click the chevron-down icon on a product to open Listing insights, which break the score into five signals:

SignalWhat Shopify says it measuresWhat to do
Description completenessThe word count of the product descriptionWrite a fuller description (below). Shopify says Sidekick can give more detailed feedback on a description
Image coverageThe number of product imagesAdd more real photos of the product
Product reviewsAverage rating and review count, counting only reviews verified by trusted sourcesCollect genuine reviews from real buyers
Variant & option completenessNumber of variants and options and their in-stock availability, plus option names with acronyms or numbers agents may find hard to understandClean up option names; keep variants in stock or accurate
Shop policy completenessWhether shipping, returns, refund and other store policies existPublish your policies

Shopify doesn't publish numeric thresholds for the meter or for any signal, so don't chase a number. Treat each signal as a checklist item.

Shopify also notes the meter covers only what you control. Search relevance also depends on popularity, customer engagement and brand recognition, which build over time. A complete listing makes you eligible to compete; it doesn't guarantee you win.

Step 3: Fix the gaps, in this order

Start with products that showed up under Improve your listing for queries you care about, then your best sellers. For each one:

1. Store policies (once, for the whole store)

This is the fastest win because it applies to every product. Go to Settings > Policies and fill in your return and refund, shipping, terms of service and privacy policies. Shopify's store policies page says return and refund, terms of service, shipping and contact information can use automated templates (turn on Use automated policy), which Shopify keeps updated. Review the generated text so it matches what you actually do. Shopify's optimization guide adds that complete, current policies let AI agents answer questions such as "what's the return policy?" accurately.

2. Descriptions

The signal measures word count, and Shopify says AI channels use descriptions to match natural-language queries. Length alone isn't the goal: a longer description should add facts a shopper would ask about.

  • What it is, in plain words, in the first sentence
  • Materials, dimensions, weight, capacity or fit
  • Who it's for and what it's used for
  • Care, compatibility and what's in the box

If your full description lives in a metafield rather than the standard description field, the meter may undercount it. Point Catalog at the right field with Catalog mapping instead of duplicating text.

3. Variant and option names

Shopify flags option names with acronyms or numbers that agents may find hard to understand or recommend. Internal codes are the usual culprit. For example, an option value like "BLK-02" says nothing to a shopper or an agent; "Black" does. Use the option name a customer would use ("Color", "Size", "Material"), spell out abbreviations, and remove sold-out variants you'll never restock, since the signal also looks at in-stock availability.

4. Images

Add more real product images: different angles, scale or in-use shots, and an image for each color or style variant. While you're there, give each image descriptive alt text.

5. Reviews

Only reviews verified by trusted sources count. The only legitimate way to improve this signal is to ask real customers for reviews after delivery. Don't buy or write reviews: it's dishonest and Shopify only counts verified ones anyway.

Beyond the five signals

The meter doesn't cover everything AI platforms use. Shopify's optimization guide also lists product type, vendor, collections, tags and barcodes (GTIN, UPC or ISBN). And a product Shopify classifies as uncategorized is excluded from Catalog entirely (Catalog requirements), so make sure each product has a product category and, where it has one, a barcode.

Step 4: Re-test and track results

Shopify's agentic products page says Catalog continuously updates your product data, so AI channels receive your latest inventory and prices. After fixing a batch of products, re-run the same queries and note whether they moved into the top results. Keep a short list of 5-10 queries and re-run them monthly so you compare like with like.

Then check whether it mattered. The same Agentic section reports Sales, Orders, Online store sessions and Online store conversion per AI channel, and Shopify says sales include both referral-based and direct checkout sales. Agentic performance analytics aren't yet available for headless stores. For more ways to measure, see how to track sales from ChatGPT and other AI assistants.

Doing this across a whole catalog

The preview works one query at a time, which is fine for best sellers but slow for hundreds of products. Our free AI readiness checker gives a quick read on your storefront. Our app, Surfaced, scores the whole catalog and applies fixes such as categories, alt text and barcodes in bulk, with undo. Disclosure: we make it. Everything in this guide can be done by hand in your Shopify admin.
