We Scored 224 Shopify Brands for AI Shopping Readiness

AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini now answer questions like "find me a waterproof hiking boot under $200" by reading store catalogs directly. So we asked a simple question: how ready are the best-known Shopify brands?

We ran 224 of them through our free AI readiness checker, the same public scan anyone can run, and published every score in the AI Shopping Readiness Index.

The headline numbers

  • Average score: 86/100. Big brands are mostly in decent shape.
  • 75% lose points on product descriptions. Descriptions are often short, marketing-only copy. An assistant can't answer "is it machine washable?" or "what are the dimensions?" from a slogan.
  • 75% are missing barcodes (GTIN/UPC/EAN) on products or in their product structured data. Assistants use barcodes to match the same product across sources and to trust that it is what it says it is.
  • Image alt text is a top-3 issue for 61% of stores. Alt text is how assistants "see" color, material and style.
  • None block the major AI crawlers in robots.txt. Access isn't the problem; the catalog data is.

Who scored highest

Beginning Boutique, Gymreapers and YoungLA (99) top the index, followed by Alphalete Athletics, Faherty, Lunya, Native Union and Pet Honesty (98). What they share: descriptive titles, images with alt text, and complete store policies. Even the leaders usually lose a point or two on barcodes or structured data.

By category, electronics and gear and apparel and footwear lead with an average of 89. Food and drink (83) and beauty and personal care (84) trail, mostly because of short descriptions and missing barcodes. Each category has its own page in the index.

What this means for a smaller store

If brands with full e-commerce teams leave points on the table, most stores do too. The good news is that the top issues are fixable without a redesign:

  1. Rewrite descriptions as facts. 50+ words: what it is, materials, dimensions, fit, use and care.
  2. Add barcodes to every variant that has one, and make sure your theme outputs them in Product JSON-LD.
  3. Write alt text for product images (product name plus color or view).
  4. Publish all four policies (refund, shipping, privacy, terms) at Shopify's standard /policies/ URLs.

Check your own store

The free checker gives any Shopify store the same 0–100 score in about 20 seconds, with the top issues and worst-scoring products. If you'd rather fix things in bulk, Surfaced scans every product from your admin and applies safe fixes (alt text, SEO fields, Shopify categories) with one click and undo.

Method: public storefront data only, up to 250 products per store, scanned October 21, 2026. Full table and FAQ on the index page. Brands named are not affiliated with Surfaced.
